A Stunning Retrofit Transformation with AL13: Quadra Gardens

Meet Quadra Gardens in Comox, BC—AL13’s retrofit project that brought this multi-family residential complex back to life. Quadra Gardens had been battling against BC’s harsh weather conditions with its original wood cladding, and it suffered discoloration, mould growth, and weather-related damage over time that impacted the building’s outdated appearance and overall property value.
With a focus on enhancing durability, modernizing aesthetics, and minimizing renovation costs, the project team sought a cladding solution that would similarly retrofit the existing cladding while ensuring long-term performance. AL13’s Panel and Plank Systems provide the ideal balance of durability and design.
For Quadra Gardens, the challenge was clear: How do you transform an aging, weather-worn residential complex into a modern, durable, and visually striking building—while keeping costs and installation time under control?

Enhanced Weather Resistance: Tested and Proven Performance

Vancouver Island’s coastal climate brings relentless rain, wind-driven moisture, and humidity, all of which can compromise a building’s exterior over time. Poorly designed cladding traps water, leading to mold growth, material failure, and costly repairs—a major concern in wet regions.
AL13’s mechanically fastened system is engineered to counter these challenges. As a pressure-equalized rainscreen, it features an outer cladding layer with a ventilated air gap behind it, allowing moisture to drain and evaporate before it can cause damage.
But how do we know it works? AL13 Panel and Plank systems are third-party tested to ensure proven resistance to water penetration, wind loads, and extreme weather conditions. This means that even in the harshest environments, AL13’s systems help keep the building dry, structurally sound, and free from long-term moisture damage—a crucial advantage in a rainy climate.

Modernized Aesthetics with Seamless Design Integration

AL13’s Panel and Plank Systems share the same frame components, ensuring that different systems integrate seamlessly without requiring separate installation methods or additional substructures. This minimizes limitations while allowing architects to create dynamic, multi-textured façades without unnecessary labor or costs.

A Retrofit Built to Last with AL13

Quadra Gardens retrofit was more than just a visual upgrade—it was about refreshing the aesthetic, extending the building’s lifespan, and doing it all within budget. Vancouver Island’s harsh climate demands a cladding solution that can withstand constant rain and wind exposure.
Beyond function, AL13 offers a variety of premium finishes that maintain their vibrancy and integrity for years. Certified coatings protect against fading, chalking, and weather damage, ensuring the building’s fresh, modernized look lasts well into the future.
