‘Iolani School Arrillaga
Student Center
Completed in 2026, the Arrillaga Student Center at ʻIolani School establishes a new architectural focal point on the Honolulu campus. Designed by WCIT Architecture in collaboration with Gensler, the building serves as a central gathering space, bringing together dining, learning, and community functions beneath an expansive canopy.

Explore how AL13 systems were integrated across the building, followed by a case study demonstrating three ways AL13 helped to align design intent and constructability.
The design for the Arrillaga Student Center was an ambitious architectural project complicated with several custom details. The AL13 team provided wonderful support and was genuinely invested in the project's success. AL13 products and systems were flexible enough to respond to the unique architectural design requirements, including curving horizontal and vertical surfaces, accommodating dimensions that vary, and many unique transition details.

The team from AL13 provided timely responses throughout the design and construction process. We recommend using AL13 for future projects. Our project teams at WCIT are already looking for the next project to use AL13.

Staircase
Soffit Detail
The Challenge:
The stairwells are prominent circulation elements, making the underside of each stair flight a highly visible architectural feature. The design called for a continuous wood-look plank soffit with consistent grain direction from floor to floor.
The Solution
Working with the architect and installer, AL13 helped revise the transition detail using standard system components. A defined transition point was introduced at each level, eliminating the curved geometry while preserving visual flow. The result was a clean, buildable solution that preserved the uninterrupted wood-look appearance while simplifying installation.
AL13 Batten System in a 2” x 6” profile, finished in Light European Cherry, used as a vertical screen at the ʻIolani School. Custom-length battens are installed with consistent spacing to align with the soffit finish. The system provides partial screening as a safety feature while maintaining airflow and light through the structure.

Curved Wall
The Challenge:
The prominent interior focal wall required the AL13 6" Plank System to follow both 90 ° and curved radius, with 2" × 2" battens layered over top to introduce depth and shadow.

The system needed to maintain consistent spacing, clean alignment, and concealed fasteners across both surfaces.
The Solution
AL13’s fabricate-on-site system allowed standard components to be adapted directly in the field. The 6" plank system was installed along the radius to create a consistent base, with 2" × 2" battens fastened from behind to maintain a clean finished surface.

Because the plank and batten systems are designed to integrate seamlessly, the curvature required no special fabrication or complex framing. Alignment and spacing remained consistent, delivering a refined, layered appearance without exposed hardware, so the design could be executed exactly as envisioned: cleanly and efficiently.

Chapel
Detail
The Challenge:
Create an embossed design element of a cross on the feature wall of the chapel compatible with backlighting, without costly custom fabrication.
The
Solution
Using AL13’s batten system, the design team was able to achieve the embossed cross using standard components. The primary field consisted of 2" × 2" battens spaced at consistent 2-inch intervals. Within this layout, 2" × 6" battens were introduced selectively to create the raised cross feature.

Why AL13?
This project required material systems capable of supporting architectural expression while remaining practical to build. Across soffits, curved feature walls, and dimensional façade elements, AL13’s plank and batten systems provided the flexibility to adapt to real-world conditions without compromising design intent.
Design Versatility
Available in a wide range of finishes and profiles, AL13 systems can be applied across walls, soffits, ceilings, and other decorative applications while maintaining a consistent design language. Standard components can be configured to accommodate transitions, curvature, and dimensional features — without custom fabrication.
Long-Term Durability
Durable finishes and tested performance make AL13 systems well-suited to demanding exterior and institutional environments, including humid coastal climates like Honolulu. Engineered from aluminum, AL13 systems provide lasting performance without the warping, cracking, or degradation associated with traditional materials.
Installation Efficiency
Profiles can be cut and fitted on site, allowing installation to adapt to evolving construction conditions. From stair transitions to curved interior walls and façade detailing, AL13 supported clean execution using familiar construction methods.

Our overall experience with AL13 was excellent, from material ordering and delivery to installation. One of the biggest advantages of working with AL13 is their detailed project takeoffs, which make the ordering process significantly easier and more efficient. The finished ceilings exceeded our expectations—the final result is both visually striking and impressive. We would recommend AL13 for future projects.
